I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about food, where it comes from, how we grow it or it grows itself, how we get it, and how it goes to waste.
In early 2015, I was taking a yoga class and noticed an old pear tree next to the studio’s back driveway. I asked the instructors if they were going to do anything with the fruit. They weren’t and they asked if I wanted to take it. I jumped at the chance, took a couple of hours, and picked their fruit. I took it home and preserved it and gave them a jar back in thanks.
While I was working, I got to thinking: how many other people might have a fruiting or nutting tree or bush in their yard and not really want to do anything with that food? How many people have such a successful garden they can’t eat it all themselves and don’t have time to can or preserve it? How much of that food potentially goes to waste? So, I posted to Facebook that I’d be willing to pick fruit or nuts or whatever if anyone else had anything growing in their yard that they didn’t care about and a few other folks responded. That’s where I figured I might actually have an idea.
As I thought about it more, I knew that I wanted to create a place where people with excess food (on purpose or by luck) and people with need or desire for fresh local food could connect and exchange so that there’s less waste and more community.
