Inauguration 2017 — Reporting from the Nation’s Capital

Civil Beat federal reporter Kirstin Downey, photographer Cory Lum and engagement editor Anthony Quintano arrived in Washington, D.C., yesterday afternoon to cover Friday’s presidential inauguration of Donald Trump.
Civil Beat’s coverage will begin later today, with daily stories on our website and videos and photos on Facebook and Twitter. You can also sign-up for our morning newsletter, here.
Our reporting team is embedded with a sizable Hawaii contingent — comprised of Trump supporters and protesters — also making the East Coast trip. In addition, the Civil Beat team will be monitoring our congressional delegation as plans are formulated to safeguard Hawaii’s interests.
Our newsroom anticipates major shifts in federal policy, and it would be a disservice to you, our readers, if all we did was republish Washington wire reports. So starting today, Kirstin will spend the majority of her time in Washington, D.C., producing enterprise and in-depth reporting that will get out in front of developments that will affect the islands. Issues like climate change, health care, education, military spending and other things that will impact local residents.
It’s important to note that this particular trip to the nation’s capital was made possible by 2016 year-end donations to Civil Beat from readers like you.
As we begin 2017, we are focused on demonstrating the impact of your support through our reporting. If you want to help us continue to provide our community with ad-free nonprofit news that you can trust, please consider starting off the new year with a tax-deductible gift.
