I’m not sure I completely buy this statement. What separates the “common person” from the “totalitarian government” (or force) that looms so strongly in Orwell’s 1984? I mean, they’re just people too, aren’t they? (Albeit, people with a good deal of power — but still.) When you have a community of “common individuals” possessing the capability to surveil or police others, won’t there emerge some natural heirarchy of society-level policing? The haves and the have-nots? What about those still uncomfortable with the idea of broadcasting the innate self via social media? I’d argue that, with the right tech, there really isn’t much separating us “common” folk from those in power, behind closed doors — those who traditionally act as “Big Brother.”
Everyone watching everyone would be okay if all the data was publicly available and publicly negotiated
