Obviously PI’s are not solely NIH funded. Return per R01 is based on the assumption that non-NIH funding per investigator is equal.

I find it difficult to assume that a PI with 5 R01’s (and the corresponding lab size) cannot acquire substantially more non-NIH funding (intramural funds at prestige universities, private funds, income from patents and lab services, etc) than a PI with 1 R01.
