4 Simple Lessons For 10X Better Social Media Marketing
For over 10 years, I’ve been lucky to work with marketing and advertising. From production as an agency designer to strategically as a marketing manager for larger corporations. And the last couple of years I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity and responsibility to recruit, build and lead digital and social media teams.
Where the hard lesson learned is: creating content that drives engagement and a ton of traffic is ridiculously hard. Specially when you have to keep up speed and post content to your social and digital platforms several times a week, if not several times a day. Even though no one is really expecting or waiting for your platforms to be updated with content.
To have a good shot of succeeding you should definitely create relevant content that either informs, engages or simply entertains your audience.
I’ve tried many different approaches and experiments over the years both in digital and social media marketing, and I thought I would share 4 simple tricks that basically have become the fundamentals in my approach to driving traffic and building an audience.
1. Reframe Your Thinking To 10X
First of all, almost everyone is thinking about how they can grow the business and brand 10%. But what if you could be thinking of a 10X growth instead of the usual 10%? Well, you should, we should all be. So whatever you are thinking, dare to think bigger! You need to have a “Moonshot” approach to really move things and reach and engage your audience.
Great inspiration to a 10X thinking approach is Elon Musk and what he and the team is accomplishing with Tesla Motors and SpaceX. And not to forget Travis Kalanick and the Uber team with their tremendous growth. Incredible “shooting for the moon” type of thinking. Almost everyone in marketing is working their butts off on delivering a 10% increase with the next campaign or activity. But what if you could with a 10X amount of effort be delivering a 10X solution, then you’ll have a good chance to really accomplish something great with your marketing.
2. Why you? Define your purpose
Why should anybody listen? What are you set out to accomplish? What are your goals? What is your audience actively searching for regarding your brand or industry? Whoever your audience is and whatever your objectives may be, don’t post the same content as everybody else. Choose your platforms carefully. Find a differentiation in content, find a voice and visual style to be consequent to. Try new formats, take risks but once you can evaluate what’s performing and not, opt in for quality over quantity. Growth is good, but you also want durability for the long run.
3. Produce Relevant Content
Adapt to your platforms and use the power of content to drive business value. Depending on your brand’s identity, you’ll find different ways to excite your audience’s interest and make them care about your content. Educate and inform with useful tricks and articles. Inspire the audience with emotional and relatable stories. Or entertain by surprising your audience with a variation in content. Try to always give a fresh and relevant perspective.
4. Measure & Analyze
Track and analyze your content, always! Measure your content’s performance and strategize your production around what’s working and re-evaluating what is not. Be delivering the right content to the right people at the right time. There is no magic bullet, I just embrace a trial and error, and a Lean Startup methodology approach. What all the measuring and analyzing will do is to provide you with informative data for optimizing your marketing tactics and initiatives in all your platforms. Leave the guessing games for everybody else.
Three valuable things I’ve learned to always have top of mind: 1) Set goals. 2) Track success. 3) Analyze audience and offerings.
