Another reason to hold to the Goldwater Rule is bias. If psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists begin making “professional” pronouncements on people they haven’t examined, it becomes pure psychological bias.
And because the psychology community is predominantly slanted to the left, throwing out the Goldwater Rule becomes political bias. This decision by the APsaA was made specifically because of President Trump. It’s obviously due to the organization’s political bias.
No way would a left-leaning organization (like the APsaA or the APA or the AAMFT) break traditional ethics rules to disparage a liberal politician like Clinton or Obama.
Let’s keep politics out of professionalism (as much as possible).
