‘Addressing Robert Glasper and other common misconceptions about me (in no particular order)’
Ms. Lauryn Hill

*EDIT* Lauryn Hill fans ain’t allowed to say SHIT about the BeyHive after today 😂. Carry on.

This was the longest, rambling bit of faux woke nonsense I’ve ever read.

***I curse a lot. If that bothers you, let me assure you I don’t give a singular fuck and you can go tone police someone who does. This isn’t an academic article.***

Lemme break this shit down 😂

“The arrogance of presumption that allows someone to think that they could have all the facts about another person’s life and experience, is truly and remarkably… presumptuous.”

This redundant Ass sentence. Presumption is presumptuous? Wow deep, inspired. Girl bye you just used all those words to say absolutely nothing. It’s word salad made of only ice berg lettuce.

“I apologize for the delay in getting this posted, I was late in hearing about it.”

You always late for some shit. That’s part of the fuckin problem.

“You may be able to make suggestions, but you can’t write FOR me. I am the architect of my creative expression. No decisions are made without me. I hire master builders and masterful artisans and technicians who play beautifully, lend their technical expertise, and who translate the language that I provide into beautifully realized music.”

So you hire ppl to make music for you. THATS EXACTLY WTF HE SAID. Are you an artist, or are you a curator?

“These are my songs, musicians are brought in because of the masterful way that they play their instruments.”

No. You use a new band every tour because you don’t own all of the production for miseducation. You have to remix every time you perform it because it’s your ONE Ass album and you need to try to provide something newish to people. Whenever bands fail to make your old ass songs sound new you fault them instead of YOURSELF for not putting out any new music.

“The Miseducation was the first time I worked with musicians outside of the Fugees who’s report and working relationship was clear.”

… did… did you mean RAPPORT?

“I may have been inclusive, but these are my songs.”

If you’re so “inclusive” why’d you “forget” to “include” the actual artists on the album credits? Hmmmmmmmm?

“I am paying for a service, and looking for something SPECIFIC, which isn’t up to someone else’s interpretation or opinion.”

Exactly. You are paying for a service. So people you’re working with as colleagues have to roll out the red carpet for you why? They’re accomplished musicians right?

“There are artists who do cut pay though, James Brown was notorious for docking musicians if they did something he didn’t like, I’m sure there are others.”

James Brown was an abusive drug addict soooo…. Not sure we should be using him as a standard of behavior

“I’d left ‘the machine’. With ‘it’ went some polish, but the cause we were fighting for, creative integrity, was worth far more than a little polish to me.”

Is polish the new word for punctuality?

“Maybe I didn’t provide the experience that a musician may have wanted or expected during that time, but I was straight-forward, direct, and about the business at hand.”

You didn’t provide anything. You sent someone else to do your dirty work in this situation. You didn’t show up at all.

“Making my art is a labor of Love, but it’s still labor, and can be labor-intensive at that”

Yea… like 20 plus years? Making art isn’t the same as remixing it.

“If a musician was looking for a cushy job filled with the same trappings I was purposely weaning myself from, we wouldn’t have been on the same page anyway. “

Like showing up to work, being paid what they were promised? Clearly not the same page.

“I’m confused as to why such a principled musician, who thought I ‘stole’ from his friends, would show up to work for me anyway. 🤔 If that was hypocrisy or opportunism instead of genuine interest, it would further explain why an artist would feel the need to put his or her guard up.”

Sounds like gaslighting but ok sis. It’s just business right? Just providing a service right?

“The expectation to make it all come together is on me. The risk and the financial losses are on me. Hence, MY VIBE, though not the only consideration, is the priority. “

You. Don’t. Even. Be. There. 👏🏽

“rehearsal was about readying myself for the battle I knew I was entering into for simply not allowing a system to pimp me.”

This situation was ten years ago. What “new music”? 😂

“ I don’t think of Harriet Tubman’s skills as those of a hostess, but rather her relentless dedication to helping people who wanted out of an oppressive paradigm. #IGETOUT”

Girl Harriet should shoot your one stolen album twenty years ago, concert canceling, late ass for having the AUDACITY to compare yourself to her. Muva Harriet was there regardless of if her “vibe” was right because that’s what you do when ppl are counting on and looking up to you.

“And just to clear up an old urban legend that somehow people still believe, I do not hate white people.”

Bruh what? What does racism have to do with your dealings with other black musicians? Cut it the fuck out with this ineffective deflection. But I bet the white liberals will eat it up tho. Rally the troops 🙌🏽

“Who are you to say I didn’t do enough? Most people are probably just hearing your name for the first time because you dropped MINE in an interview, controversially. Taking nothing away from your talent, but this is a fact.”

He is Robert Glasper. And I believe him 100%.

“The Miseducation was my only solo studio album, but it certainly wasn’t the only good thing I did.”

It was the only thing you did solo that you didn’t do solo.

“When exposure and sexualization of the Black female body was the standard, SOMEONE stood up and represented a different image entirely, giving a generation of young women options and alternatives of self-representation. #AMNESIA”

There are and were lots of contemporaries during your time and before that didn’t display open sex appeal. You are not original in this. And your slut shaming isn’t new either. Sexism is the oldest trick in the oppressor wheelhouse. If your album was released in 2018 you’d be dragged for being a slut shaming hypocrite. You just found ways to make sexism more palatable to women that’s not an accomplishment or testament to your impact. That’s an act of treason to the struggle.

“Couldn’t or didn’t tune my own guitar? That sounds like an assumption.”

He literally witnessed you have someone else do it for you. Where is the assumption?

“ take rehearsal seriously, I take performance seriously, I take my art seriously.”

I just straight up had to laugh at this 😂😂😂

“If a musician isn’t accomplished, he or she wouldn’t have been called.”

But earlier in a statement you denied people knowing who Robert Glasper was sis. What’s the truth? Who is he to say you didn’t do enough? Apparently an accomplished musician if you called on him.

“Ignorant patriarchy is a b#tch though,”

First it was racism now it’s patriarchy 😂😂😂😭😭😭 everyone is to blame but… you. Trying to rally the feminists too, sis?

“My standards are too high, and my process too idiosyncratic, not to work with people who really want to be there.”

You not there tho. Why should they be? 😂

“I remix my songs live because I haven’t released an album in several years. There’s a ton of backstory as to why, but there’s no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I’ve been performing them without some variation and exploration. I’m not a robot. If I’d had additional music out, perhaps I would have kept them as they were. I didn’t, so I revise and rearrange them according to what I’m feeling in that moment. This way, my performances are heartfelt and authentic, not me just going through the motions. I can’t imagine why that would be a foreign concept to anyone who appreciates jazz.”

You gone ride that old ass album til it breaks is what I read 😂

“And the myth that I’m not allowed to play the original versions of my songs is…a myth (anyone who’s seen my current show knows this).”

It’s not true for all your songs but it’s definitely true for others. Acoustic versions aren’t “originals” btw.

“Me being late to shows isn’t because I don’t respect my fans or their time, but the contrary, It can be argued that I care too much, and insist on things being right.”

SO START EARLIER SO YOU ARENT WASTING THE TIME OF ANYONE WHOS STILL DUMB ENOUGH TO PAY TO SEE YOU. 😂😂😂😂😂

“I don’t owe anyone self-repression. Some fans will grow with me, some won’t and that’s ok.”

You’ve been playing the same shit twenty years. Where is the growth?

This was a long ass, entertaining, bunch of nothing. There’s holes in this narrative I could drive a truck through but go off sis. 😂

Oh, tell whoever you paid to write- I mean “collaborated with” or the person who “remixed” these words for you to get writing classes in their life geez. 😬 I say that cause if you’re the person who wrote this (and i hope not) you’re not helping the argument that you actually wrote “Miseducation” at all 🚶🏾‍♀️

The black community is too full of these class enemies that slap a few buzz words on their nonsense and y’all eat that shit up and call it “woke”.

I said what i said. Hotep Lauryn Hive can go argue with ya momma.

Lauryn Hill had the unmitigated GALL to claim her issues with Robert Glasper were patriarchy and misunderstanding and that men in the industry don’t respect women (which might apply in any situation BUT this one) when she stole her music from BLACK MEN.

Almost ALL of these men have gone one to write other hits and have their own solo projects and Lauryn has not- wanna know why? CAUSE SHE IS A THIEF and she can’t.

After she used her industry influence to try to strong arm these black men using the system and lost she had the nerve to take their work and not even show up to perform it. 😂

Hear from them yourself. Review their work yourself if you think it’s far fetched.
