Experience More Joy with this Simple Mindset Change
Did you know that 40% of Americans come up with New Year’s Resolutions?
That’s over 129 million people!
Yet, according to a study done by the University of Scranton, only 8% will achieve their NY’s resolutions at years end.
Why is that number so low?
Today, I am going to share with you how evolution based thinking can help you experience more joy and reach your commitments in 2017.
Greatness by Evolution vs. Revolution:
Often times when we first make a commitment, we set the bar extremely high…Sometimes even too high as we shoot for a revolution in our day to day lives.
I have a friend who wants to read more… But, the stress of reaching her book per week goal stops her from reading altogether.
I have another friend who wants to lose weight… But, his incredibly difficult diet makes it near impossible to keep, and the unhealthy foods stack up.
This is the trouble with revolution thinking.
Feasible? Not so much…
The Difficulty of Massive Change:
As humans, we hate change. We dislike disruption. We prefer to live within our safety nets, hoping to never leave our comfort zones.
The other problem with revolution thinking is it’s often unsustainable. The commitment excites us, but the massive lifestyle change required is too much and we give up.
The good news is there is a better way..
My First Career Roadblock:
After graduating from college, I remember the excitement I felt about a career coaching basketball.
However, as I began to study for the GRE, I became completely overwhelmed.
There was so much to learn and so little time. I was in a revolution mindset as I wanted immediate results.
I was saved by a friend who gave me his online prep course.
This course broke down the lessons into small manageable daily lessons helping me take gradual steps forward in my learning.
I began to feel more confident and the test went well. : )
The Power in Small:
This experienced helped solidify my belief in the power of chipping away daily, but I also have come to realize how much the research backs gradual improvement.
According to a study from Harvard’s, Teresa Amabile, small wins have a surprisingly strong positive effect on our psyche. Progress made in small steps can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one.
What’s even better is evolution based thinking is sustainable. We can make continual progress each day, and the research says that will lead to more great days helping us to experience more joy.
We can build incredible momentum towards our commitments by focusing on incremental improvement.
Let’s look at a step by step process of how evolution based thinking can help you reach your commitments.
In conclusion, the revolution mindset is overrated. Focus instead on the process of becoming great. Embrace the evolution mindset, experience more joy, and reach your commitments through your effort and habits.
Success after all is nothing more than the culmination of small wins.
2017 is your year!!
Keep Chipping Away at your Greatness
