Believe it or not, the battle on the field between Division I programs starts on social media. On paper, the best players form the better teams. In order to be the better team you must recruit those best players, which means beating out other schools in the process. Recruits want to feel like they’re making the right life decision and social media presence strongly sways that choice. Two example programs who have excelled on and off the field are Ohio State and Clemson. Ohio State (ranked ) has the number 1 Twitter in the country and Clemson (ranked) had the best Twitter the year before. They realize the importance of social media when it comes to recruiting: Clemson added $167,000 (in three years) to payroll and Ohio State added $100,000 (in two years) in order improve their creative content. This elevates the top level competitors and gives them an absolute advantage over other college programs. I am anxious to see how this will grow in the next decade and if other universities rise to the top.
