What’s in it for me?
The narrative heard today and why it’s causing an irrevocable decay.
All too often I find myself wanting to ask the question, what’s the point? I mean seriously? Are we really talking about how stressed you’ve become because of your circumstance? I’ve heard countless times, “the money’s good but I hate the work” or “I’m just going to school for this because the money’s good”. Is this what we live for? Money, comfort, and self indulgence? All too often the people I speak with are stating how they are stressed, struggling with depression and anxiety but don’t know why. The answer is plain to me, and I don’t know how to be more forward, find God and live your own life.
Why are there wars in a world filled with abundance? I tell you it starts with you and I. IT IS BECAUSE SOCIETY HAS BECOME SELFISH.
Unfulfilled parents tell us, “go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a nice job”. Stressed out teachers and professors tell us, “read this, think this way, be quiet, and listen”. Our peers who struggle with multiple addictions unbeknownst to themselves tell us, “listen to this, watch this, look at this, get money, try this, wear that, drink this, smoke that, party hard, yolo”. Our relatives tell us, “it’s okay to have fun as long as you settle down one day, save money, find a good job”. The tv tells us, “sex sells, beers good, eat more, consume consume consume, money buys happiness”. Music tells us, “immorality is okay, try the drugs, drink a little, live a little, look at this wealth, look at my gold, look at meeeeeee”! Then you go to “church” ano the pastors talking about, “we need this money to fund this” while wearing an Armani suit, $450 shoes, platinum Rolex, and driving a 6 series BMW. Almost everywhere you look the message is me me me, what can I do for me, what can you do for me? BUT GOD SAYS to give until it hurts. And to love the people around you as yourself. Why are we listening to all these people who are so unfulfilled. Why is drug abuse among celebrities so prevalent? Why are there people making more than $100,000 a year killing themselves? Ask yourself why you spend so much time looking at other people’s lives and neglecting your own? Why do you drink or smoke? Why are you unhappy? Why don’t you know yourself.
The reason is simple, we have lost sight of God.
Where there is no thought of God there is no peace. We seek after everything but God. What does it mean if you have everything you want, but you don’t have peace?
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Stop with the selfishness
Trust me, if you know me personally you know that I’ve done a lot. I’ve done drugs, had girls, had money, had status, and partied harder than most. I could sell a lot of marijuana in a moments notice. I’ve done it. However I never found lasting fulfillment until I found God. I put away my selfishness and started to consider others. I started to know what love is. I started to appreciate what I had, rather than squandering away. I am now content with having nothing and giving what I do have. I know that if I love my neighbor as myself they are better off. This love isn’t about me it is about others. Life is about love. Life is about God. Because God is love.
Love is selfless
Find God I urge you. Jesus is to be found when we seek whole-heartedly. Stop with the vices. Stop listening to the opinions of people. Read the Bible, pray, and do what you know to be right. Don’t give your entire life to money, fame, or pleasure. I can assure you, you won’t regret searching for God. But seeking God isn’t about keeping everything and living how you want and gaining God. It is about seeking God and living the way he calls us, because as the Creator he knows the way His creation functions.
