Comedywire Pros Pick Their Jokes of the Week
Congrats to Sonja Sofi Savanovic and this week’s 5 private session winners: Tasha Backlin, Mike Glazer, Matt Stofsky, Trisha Bullock, and Joseph Swam!
Pro comedian Joe Toplyn, Former head-writer of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman, picks his joke of the week:
Winner: Sonja Sofi Savanovic, Follow her on Comedywire
Setup: Miley Cyrus and Comedian Dane Cook Are Hooking Up
Punch Line: He will not have to steal another joke ’cause he’s dating one.
To create this great joke Sonja used Punch Line Maker #4: Find a play on words in the topic. For the handle “Miley Cyrus,” Sonja came up with some association like “not serious” and its sub-association “joke.” For the handle “Dane Cook,” she thought of the association “steals jokes.” Then she created a punch line that links the two.
I admire the clear logic of the joke. (My Joke Maximizer #4 is: Make everything clear.) Sonja constructed an angle (the middle part of the joke) that spells out why the relationship between those two makes sense: it’s clearly true that if someone has something, he doesn’t have to steal it anymore. The solid logic of the joke drives the reader very smoothly and efficiently to the surprise of the punch line.
Congrats, Sonja! Joe will be sending Sonja an autographed copy of his book: “Comedy Writing for Late-Night TV.”
Tom Leopold, former writer at Seinfeld and Cheers, selects his 5 comedy dedication recipients:
