Former Head Writer for The Tonight Show Picks His Joke of the Week

Congrats to Chaco Daniel for winning this week’s joke pick!

Pro comedian Joe Toplyn, Former head-writer of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Show with David Letterman, picks his joke of the week:

Winner: Chaco Daniel, Follow him on Comedywire

Joe’s comments:

Setup: Tourists flock to see Donald Trump-like bird in a Chinese zoo.

Punch Line: One thing the bird has in common with Trump — they both crap on newspapers.

Chaco’s great joke is an example of Punch Line Maker #4 in action. That’s the one that suggests, “Find a play on words in the topic.”

Chaco started by identifying the two handles of the topic: “Trump” and “bird.” Among the long list of associations of Trump is “insults the media.” And among the long list of associations of “bird” is “line bird cage with newspaper.”

Chaco’s punch line links those two associations with a play on the words “crap on,” which means both “insult” and “defecate on.”

Chaco’s joke is an excellent example of political humor that’s likely to have broad appeal. That’s because whether you’re pro-Trump or anti-Trump, you’d have to agree that he badmouths the “disgusting and corrupt media.” So a broad audience is likely to accept the punch line as true and to laugh at it.

Congrats, Chaco! Joe will be sending Chaco an autographed copy of his book, “Comedy Writing for Late-Night TV,” the book that teaches you how to write jokes like a pro.

Be sure to keep writing and staying engaged every day. The more your write and the more you vote, the better your chances of becoming next week’s winner!
