Joe Toplyn Picks His Joke of the Week

Congrats to Tyler Martindale for winning this week’s joke pick!

Pro comedian Joe Toplyn, Former head-writer of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman, picks his joke of the week:

Winner: Tyler Martindale, Follow him on Comedywire

Joe’s comments:

Setup: New movie screen allows for glasses-free 3-D at a larger scale

Punch Line: It’s called a “play.”

To write this great joke, Tyler may have turned to one of the lesser-used joke-writing techniques, Punch Line Maker #5: Visualize the topic.

To use this technique, Tyler could have started by forming a mental picture of the setup. He could have imagined an audience, without glasses, watching 3-D figures performing in front of it.

Then Tyler could have come up with a different perspective on that mental picture: he could have realized that the 3-D figures would resemble actors performing in a play. And that different perspective gave him his punch line.

Tyler maximized the impact of his joke by keeping it as short as possible–the punch line is only four syllables–and ending on the laugh trigger, “play.”

Congrats, Tyler! Joe will be sending Tyler an autographed copy of his book, “Comedy Writing for Late-Night TV,” the book that teaches you how to write jokes like a pro.

Be sure to keep writing and staying engaged every day. The more your write and the more you vote, the better your chances of becoming next week’s winner!
