A new start
Among the things we can´t avoid is the fact that a period of time will come to an end. We can leave things half way like a project, a business plan or a promise but a deadline will always come, that limit given by days or hours that we can´t escape, no matter how much we wish to end it sooner (or later). But it is precisely this that gives the mind space to create a world of possibilities and new beginnings, to observe what is left behind and to imagine what might come. Just like a natural platform to reach higher. So…let´s surf that wave!
Today I start a physical trip and a virtual one in here. The physical one is towards the ocean, from Mexico City (my hometown) to London and then to Southampton where I´ll embark a new ship for me (I work for cruise ships) and this is always, always, always such an adventure! The places you see, the scenery you couldn’t imagine would be so beautiful, the design and surroundings in ports of different countries and the amazing chance to be next to aquatic animals that you wouldn´t find back home. The people you know on board, the two thousand crew member you will live with for months and the about four thousand different passengers each week, will shape the way you understand the world. And no doubt, if you keep an open heart the chaos you might experience will make you softer, more flexible, compassionate and tolerant. In a nutshell…It is such a trip!
But this is not the only type of happiness I would like to share though here. Not only the excitement or sensorial wonders but what I´ve learnt through my own path that can lead you to cultivate another kind of happiness, more stable and serene. The one that comes from the inner side of each one instead of being dependant on the exterior (people, objects, situations or experiences). The intention is to share what some wise people I´ve met in the way have shown me, the beauty of some philosophies and some authors that have given me some great perspective in life. I wish this is also something to share.
And that´s why this project is called “Commit to Happiness”, and the phrase is symbolically located in a picture frame (a small wheel of fortune next to my bed) where I used to hang pics of a previous relationship that didn´t work and took me a while to get over. I chose that spot because I think it is a common place for all of us, the deep appreciation of something and then the fact to let it go (it might be other than a person), to move forward and to commit to new dreams or ideals.
I looked at that picture frame thinking of how we move in one direction when we commit, how our emotions get way more intense and we are motivated and how our mind finds a place to focus constantly… Then I thought of all the fulfilling things that make me smile and how keeping a commitment with those ways have make my life absolutely better, so I´m sure having a constant reminder next to my bed will help me to reinforce such intention.
And his is how the first reminder is “Commit with Happiness”, not with the one that is related to hedonic results, to pleasure of the senses all the time (nothing wrong with it, of course) but the one that is cultivated with all those things that help you grow in every possible way and turn your life into something more meaningful. I wish this trip can be one in company, enjoyable and with a positive impact for you and me, as an adventure in the exterior and flourishing in the interior.
See you soon!
