Republicans For Hillary (Seriously)

The Republican party has a difficult dilemma before them. Posterity, Legacy, Fundraising, and Reputation are all in play here in the 2016 Campaign cycle. The choice is a stark and trying one. To support Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, or sit this one out?

The case for and against Trump is made ad nauseam. Instead, I want to examine supporting Clinton in 2016 as a Republican. When we get past the rhetoric and stomping our feet, what does supporting Clinton in 2016 do for us or, how does it hurt us?

Hillary is a known commodity. She offers little in a way of surprise. You know who her team is, you know what their advice is, you know what her policies will be and how she’d go about them. You know what her stance on the Middle East will be, and you know how she’ll deal with Russia, ISIS, and nuclear proliferation.

With Donald Trump, you have no idea what he will do. No idea who will be in his cabinet. He could put try to make Flavor Flav the Dept. of Defense Secretary. His positions are horrifying, unknown, or constantly changing. We do know he has already advocated committing war crimes, dissolve the nuclear nonproliferation agreement, modifying the 1st Amendment and abolishing the 14th Amendment.

If we go with Hillary, you can sleep comfortable at night knowing we’re not going to end up in a nuclear holocaust because someone made a joke about the size of her hands. You can also rest easy at night knowing the House and Senate Republicans can either work with Hillary to compromise her policy or at least block them.

It’s a question of who would you rather play chess against? A well known, well versed opponent or someone you’ve never really seen before who plays like a crazy person. It’s much easier to mitigate damage when you at least know the other player and their gameplan.

If Hillary is voted in for 4 years, that gives us a woman President. That check marks a minority and a woman. Posterity will look favorably upon that. If Donald is voted in, we elect a billionaire white male who is a known racist, bigot, and sexist. Posterity will look very unfavorably on that.

Either candidate will only get 4 years in office. Are we more interested in having a President we know is going to lie to our faces but keep the Nation on track OR are we looking for a President to say it like it is and probably lead us into God only knows what kind of wars?

The safe Republican bet is Hillary. That’s why so many high ranking Republicans are already heading that way. It hurts. It sucks. She isn’t the person we want, but right now she is the person we need. If Donald does win. If he does try to change the Constitution. If he does commit War Crimes, the United States reputation around the world is forever changed. The Republican Party probably never recovers.

The worst Hillary will do is extend Obama’s term 4 years. There is a negligible difference between Obama and Hillary when it comes to policy, procedure, foreign policy and financial policy. So, in a different way, 4 more years of Obama or 4 years of whatever Trump may bring which in all likelihood is an impeachment about 3 months in?

On the flip side, get Trump elected, get a solid VP candidate and immediately find a reason to impeach Trump and run him out of DC. Forever he will be a ‘President’ but a disgraced one. That’s an idea worth looking at.
