With proactive maintenance you can address use of equipment that is seen risky and other deteriorating development. The aim is to avoid the root causes of damage and all the conditions in which damage can occur. How are then disruptions and problems prevented before they escalate?

The performance of the oil used by different equipment may vary considerably even between similar installations. Proactive interference with problems that are found to escalate into serious damage in the future can ensure the smooth operation of the equipment and the entire production process of the organization.

Fluid Intelligence’s Fluid Monitoring solution supports proactive maintenance by providing real-time monitoring of oil performance. The aim of the monitoring is to ensure the oil performance and the overall operating condition of the equipment. …

Monitoring oil performance in operationally critical and economically significant locations enables effective interference with emerging risk factors. Today, factors affecting oil performance can be effectively monitored by remote solutions. But for the most lubricant oil users, monitoring is still based on time-stamped oil samples.

Sampling is the most critical phase when an oil sample is traveling from the system to the laboratory, to finally create an analysis. The oil sample should of course be representative of the oil batch and contain material only from the desired object. External materials in the sample produce extra work.

ASTM — the oil sampling standard D8112–17 — was updated in the end of 2017. The updated standard deals with making sampling standardized in energy industry’s more demanding targets like turbines and oil systems. The standard can be applied as a good foundation for proper sampling in different operating environments. …

In the summer of 2017 Fluid Intelligence carried out a quite comprehensive statistical study of mobile machinery oil conditions after oil changes together with its customer. The aim of this study was to determine better methods to collect oil for oil recycling. The project generated interesting comparative information on oil condition at the time of oil change.

This article presents a short description of the research, conclusions and alternative strategies for action. The material was about 110 samples and contained samples of 20 subjects. There were a total of 15 oil types, half of which were engine oils and half of transmission and hydraulic oils. …
