Bracelet Patient Library Access Draft 1

Patient Library Access During Hospitalization or Chemotherapy

Prospective Trial of Library Access to Research Articles for Patient +/- Caregiver During Hospitalization or Chemotherapy Infusions

Submitted by Matthew Katz, MD on 28th Jun

What is the research problem :

1. Patients and caregivers have high cost to access research articles to assist with making important, real-time medical decisions.

2. Health professionals may not have time to pursue all lines of research inquiry that matter to patient.

What is your proposed solution :

Design a prospective trial linking patient’s hospital ID bracelet to hospital’s library access via barcode/Q code. Give caregiver matching access in case patient too ill.

Have pre-selected access of MD-selected articles on key questions for a specific diagnosis (e.g. brain metastasis or febrile neutropenia) available, but also direct access for patient to library itself.

Measure patient, caregiver QoL during + 1 month post hospitalization/chemo

How will your solution make a difference :

1. Leverage hospital resources for patient-centric education, directed by patient/caregiver

2. Lessen patient cost to obtain important information affecting decisions

3. May improve QoL, other important outcomes including hospital/treatment course

Setup — Allows Physicians / HCPs to add material to a resource group. Initial functionality should be a list of urls including, video, audio, library materials for the patient.

There can be multiple setup lists (ie: brain cancer base level, brain cancer chemo, etc…)

Website 1

Website 2

Video 1 (ie YouTube)

Video 2 (ie: Personalized message from caregiver, later version)

The setup list is maintained by the HCP / Institution

The Setup is maintained on a desktop or mobile platform.

Bracelet Scan — is a mobile 1-D or 2-D Barcode scanner that scans the patient bracelet, to create and/or append a record. HCP can attach a library(Setup) item, resource at any time. Duplicates will automatically be identified. Multiple HCPs can perform a bracelet scan.

Immediately after a bracelet scan, a prompt will appear for a Patient Identifier, this could be name for internal tracking. An important element to the Bracelet scan will be the attachment of a telephone number. If Mobile, the number will trigger a text that will setup an auto-install url. The telephone could be attached to the patient or the patients family caregiver.

When the patient arrives home, the patient places their bracelet in front of a computers webcam, or a mobile phone camera and allows the bracelet to be scanned. The patient / caregiver is then prompted for the telephone number. The Unique Telephone / Bracelet Combination will create an initial list of urls for the patient to have as informational resources. This resource will be kept locally.

It will be unnecessary to send patient names to remote devices. (Database issue, encrypt PHI)

(Need to work on Repeat Visit Flow, ie: continuation, New /Append)
