Like Moths to a Flame

As a hiring manager, have you ever been in a position where you had a project kick off, but you didn’t have all the resources needed to deliver the project on time, and you had to scramble to quickly find contractors to fill the gaps, only to find no-one around? We’ve spoken to a bunch of PMO Managers and Project Managers over the last few years, and it seems that this type of issue is more common than one would expect. So, we started asking some basic questions to see if we could get to the bottom of the issue:
1. Is your project cool? We’re not being facetious here; the great contractors out in the market are looking for projects that interests then, and they have choice, so make sure your project is cool, or at least seem cool
2. Have you marketed your project to potential contractors a few months before kicking off? It’s easy to assume that, because contractors don’t have lengthy notice periods, a hiring manager can wait till the last minute to recruit, but great contractors have their ears to the ground all the time, so by the time you hit them up with your project opportunity, they would have shortlisted some interesting projects already
3. Have you spoken with contractors about the rest of the team that will be involved on the project? Great contractors don’t only look at technology or job content when they choose a project, but also at the people they will be working with- especially ones that they can learn from, or ones that they’ve had good experiences with
Those are just three simple questions to ask, but if you have those little boxes ticked, we’ll bet you dollars to doughnuts that you will have contractors flocking to your projects like moths to a flame.
At CareerJunctionLtd we make sure that we know what our contractors are getting themselves into, and we do this by helping our clients tell a good story when describing their projects and work environments. It’s great to know that our contractors and permanent candidates are always going in with their eyes wide open.
