Inspiration

I spent a lot of 2015 getting inspired. In my eyes, theres drawbacks and benefits of watching and reading inspiring content, or even just following the life of someone that you look up to. The benefits come pretty easily, we all know the feeling, watching kobe highlights before the big game, or even listening to your favorite podcast before a meeting. It gets you excited, motivated, ready to take on the world. The drawbacks, for me at least, comes when its actually time to do something. Becoming motivated to do something is great, but if you’re still going to be sitting on your laptop a half hour after you watched that These 10 Teens Are Now Millionaires video, you’re not doing yourself any good.

During this year, I stumbled across daily vlogging, as a viewer. Some may argue that the only reason these are done is to grow a personal brand, or are only popular because the “vlogger” is already famous. Me, along with a little over 1.5 million people now, grew attached to Casey Neistat. Everyday, he spends hours editing, creating, and showing his actual life, as it happens, for the whole world to see.

Something that Casey touched on before, saying it was one of his main reasons for starting vlogs, was that it left him no excuses for not creating content. It forced him daily to make something new, and improve his skills and grow his reach. And from a viewers perspective, it has definitely paid off, almost doubling his channel, and still sticking with the highest quality content, the quality that got him to where he currently is.

My Resolution

While I am not a vlogger, or plan to start making vlogs (anytime soon, at least) I was immediately drawn to the idea of daily creation, pushing yourself every day to actually make something instead of just saying that you will. While having this revelation, I asked myself, what do I want to improve on? What skills do I have that I can get better, or what’s something entirely new I can learn? My breakdown came out to be something like this:

Writing

Daily posts (on Medium, or elsewhere) will become part of my everyday routine now. Documenting my progress with startups I’m working on, life experiences, or simply things going on in the world that interest me.

Graphic Design

A big part of my responsibilities as a online marketer, is graphic design. While I am not extremely fluent in the workings that go into making great online content, Im striving everyday to keep creating and learning.

Photography

Photography and film making to me is, the way to document adventures and memories so they stop fading away. By going out with the intent of capturing beautiful moments and experiences, it has led me to do what I normally wouldn’t.

Programming

While I am not currently a programmer, I am constantly working alongside and involved with those who are. I am continually impressed by the ability to make something out of nothing, and that is one of the driving factors in my interest to learn.

Challenge To You

I will be embarking on this journey starting today, and will be documenting it daily here (for the few people that read my posts.) I also want to end with leaving another person who acted as inspiration for starting this, Brian Munn, and am challenging you to do the same. No matter what industry you’re in, interests you have, or your motivations for continuing, the desire to grow and improve daily will benefit you in all different aspects tenfold. If you’re interested, leave a response, or tweet at me, my goal is to build a community of likeminded people to help push and grow each other.
