CV 101

Building your CV correctly can be the difference between securing your dream role or not. Your CV is a reflection of yourself, the type of person you are and your capabilities. A few people have asked me to help go over their CVs with them, so I decided to write a short piece detailing my top tips for a top CV.

Keep it clean

The last thing an employer wants to see is a 4 page CV cluttered with irrelevant information. Try to keep your CV to a maximum of 2 pages. Manage your layout well, leaving enough space so that its not cluttered looking but not too spacious that your CV looks empty.

Get your experience right

When listing previous work experience; give your job title, length of employment and company address as a heading. You should then go onto listing the various responsibilities you had during your role. Again, keep it short and sweet (2–4 bullet-points is ideal). Try to avoid jargon here and most importantly, DO NOT LIE. Don’t exaggerate your role or make up different responsibilities. Employers will immediately rule you out of consideration if you are found out.

Have meaningful references

Your references should be relevant, people who you’ve worked for/ with that:

1: Will be worth talking to
2:Will recommend you

Having a mentor or a past employer as a reference is a lot more relevant than your junior cert geography teacher… Make sure to ask permission from references before including them on your CV.

Other Do’s and Don’ts

Do: Try to show your personality (don’t go OTT)
Do: Proof read like there’s no tomorrow
Do: Get someone else to proof read
Do: Use figures and other forms of results as much as possible
Don’t: Use pronouns
Don’t: Use jargon, acronyms, technical terms
Don’t: Include a photo unless requested

All of the points made above are just ones I’ve picked up from talking to people and from CV workshops, and are disputable. Editing your CV is a gradual process, and one that you will more than likely do on a frequent basis when you’re applying for jobs. Just remember, keep your CV short, clean and relevant!
