Ah, the season of Devcon is upon us!
Devcon is an international annual developer’s conference, held by the Ethereum Foundation. It is a time for technologists, researchers, and thinkers to come together and discuss developments in the space, educate each other on the power of decentralized technologies, and make connections.
This year, the conference is held in Osaka, Japan from October 8th — 11th. As robust as the Ethereum ecosystem is, there is a lack of diversity in the space (common to most technology communities). This lack of diversity can lead to narrow perspectives and opinions, stifling the creativity and growth of these groups. And so, the Ethereum Foundation has put together the Devcon Scholars Program which aims to award students in the community with the experience of Devcon through a travel & housing stipend. The Devcon Scholars Program partnered with ConsenSys Academy (among other organizations like the Bounties Network, UNICEF Innovate, and ConsenSys) to additionally provide these students with training around Ethereum and decentralized technologies, preparing them for an enriched and comprehensive Devcon experience.
This year 70 students were accepted into the Devcon Scholar Program, with the majority of students being beginners to Ethereum. Most students have either completed a high school education or their bachelor’s degree and hail from a multitude of countries, including South Africa, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Syria.
In our engagement with the scholars, we trained students on fundamental Ethereum topics like key generation, encryption, and smart contract logic.
