Most individuals have been developing their interpersonal skills — which include communication, team-working, and problem-solving skills — since childhood. Yet some individuals still need or want to improve them. The following are a few ways people can strengthen their interpersonal skills:
- Display positive emotions: To accomplish this, individuals may need to make a few changes in their daily lives. To start, they should begin taking pride in how they look and avoid appearing unkempt in public. Next, they can work on increasing their positive body language. Finally, individuals should smile more often when they interact with others to appear more cheerful.
- Learn to listen: A key part of any effective conversation is listening to the other person or people involved. However, just listening more is not enough, individuals must also show that they are actively listening by repeating what is said in their own words. Doing so demonstrates that a person is listening and understanding what another is saying.
- Boost emotional intelligence: A high level of emotional intelligence allows individuals to understand other people’s emotions and points of view. Empathy is one of the most important aspects of interpersonal skills because it helps individuals gain trust and respect from their peers. Even if a person disagrees with a situation, showing empathy improves their overall connection with others.
