I know your question was rhetorical, but… Some people see any worldview or belief system that differs from their own as a threat to or indictment of their view/belief system. Be it religion, politics, or anything else that inspires and inflames, or trades in the currency of passion or right(eous)ness. The Internet is the double-edged blade that makes it simultaneously easier to openly discuss your own views with like-minded folks, and be crapped on for it by people who disagree with you.
