Grocery stores weigh your bananas right in front of the customer at the register. If the customer sees the price is higher than expected because the weight of the peels is included, then the customer can say “no thanks”. But this was like suddenly being charged 7000% for the plastic produce baggie (a) having purchased bananas for months in the past without this charge, and (b) after you’ve already checked out and are not given the option of a refund.

It’s a horrific way for a growing business to treat customers.
