This is a solid article. I agree product designers and managers should focus on “jobs to be done.” This focus simplifies product decisions. However, personas are valuable because they provide an overview of a user’s goals. Personas aid understanding. I wouldn’t omit them from the process, but rather understand their foundational role.

You brought up some great points Adham. I have found that the community is split. Many users just scan titles, and this redesign works much better for that. Other users want the full context presented together, which is represented in the current version of Hacker News.
I imagine Hacker News users will react negatively to the changes. I think that the design is locked-in in their minds. Whenever Facebook makes a change to their UI it is usually met with a lot of backlash. I think the same is true here.
I agree that all designers should have some level of business competency, just like they should have some level of technical ability. The level is determined by their current position, interests, and ability. I think designers who are amazing coders are great, just as I think designers who are great in business are amazing.
I think this is a very good observation. I do believe that software will continue to be reduced and decentralized. There’s so much independent talent in software, and so many platforms to design for that no one app can consolidate it all.
