I have no doubt that Facebook can succeed at the engineering challenges posed here, but I think that we need more pressure on them to do so. Personally I’d love to see a new crop of social network startups specifically trying to tackle the issue of balancing the fun (and safety) of communicating online with friends and people like us, with the need for exposure to different ideas to avoid our culture fragmenting into opposing “red” and “blue” halves.

I started a discussion about this, and would really value input from people active in this space. I admit that Tim’s approach of nudging Facebook in the right direction is more likely than the chance of a new social networking approach achieving adoption amongst conservatives *and* liberals, but I also think that trying out radical new ideas is an important way to shift the status quo.
