I work as an editor at a book publishing company that is concerned with increasing author diversity. This is what comes up in discussions about author diversity as well — people wonder if we’ll have to lower our bar and settle for fewer book sales. It frustrates and angers me because I think authors who manage to succeed on merit (without the help of privilege) are actually the highest quality authors and have the most potential.
