Science Fiction of the Month

Hi there! This is my new Science Fiction of the Month article, in which, I talk about a science fiction book, movie, and television show that I’ve been into this month. I always love to hear about what good sci fi is out there to experience, so I share this with the hopes that others will share their good finds as well!
Sci Fi Book: Yesterday’s Gone
I listen to the Self Publishing Podcasts guys a lot and finally decided to try out some of their fiction. Yesterday’s Gone is a serial written by Sean Platt and David Wright. I read the first two “seasons” and am currently reading the third. Feels kind of like The Stand meets Resident Evil, plus a little bit of The Shining and Fringe. You don’t really know what’s going on and each episode you follow different characters and their experiences. I absolutely love when stories are written to keep me asking questions, keep me guessing. Don’t you love trying to guess what’s happening and having theories? It’s a fine craft and I hope to pull something off like that myself one day.

If you like aliens (are they really aliens?), infectious diseases (my main sci fi love), weird kids with mysterious powers, and foul-mouthed serial killers (Boricio is a darling! Trust me, just read it) — you’ll probably dig Yesterday’s Gone. Let me know if you have read it or pick it up. Would love to discuss theories with you!
Sci Fi Movie: Infini
My favorite sci fi movie find this month is Infini. I like sci fi that infuses a bit of horror and an infectious disease element, so this was right up my alley. This movie feels like The Thing meets Doom (the movie). Don’t judge! I love Doom the movie. Anyways, there’s a definite space marine vibe mixed with a terrible infectious alien presence. How can you go wrong with that? Is it the most high quality movie production ever? No. But some of the most interesting sci fi movies conceptually aren’t big motion pictures.

I found Infini on Netflix, because of course that’s where I find random sci fi movies. It did pose some interesting questions about the nature of humanity besides being entertaining. I recommend checking it out.
Sci Fi TV Show: Black Mirror
If you haven’t checked out Black Mirror yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a British television anthology series that focuses on mostly near future technologies and their potential terrifying implications for how we live our lives. There are two seasons with three episodes each and a one off special (with Jon Hamm!). Seems like they’re scheduled to make a bunch more episodes, which makes sense given the rise in the series’ popularity.
Some episodes are better than others, of course. But each is guaranteed to make you think about our own black mirrors in our lives and what the future might hold. Can we even really prepare for this? Are we trading convenience for unspeakable violations of our humanity down the road? This is speculative fiction at its finest.

I think my favorite episode is the one with Domhnall Gleeson where they create a composite of a person who has passed away to help the living cope with the death of a loved one. It really speaks to what makes a person who they are, what makes a person real. Have you watched the series? What’s your favorite episode?
Now it’s your turn. What science fiction have you been checking out this month? Anything cool? Let me know in the comments section!
