The Ledger Nano S box.

Personal notes turned into a step by step guide on how to use the Ledger Nano S. The official documentation is neat, well written and easy to read, but you can use these notes to quickly get yourself familiar with how the Ledger works in a single and easy to access page.

The Ledger Nano S can be purchased directly on Ledgerwallet.com or through vendors like Amazon. Only use trusted sellers even if supply is scarce nowadays.

Once you get your box you will find the straps and cards included in it, chose your favorite, get the cable provided and plug it into your machine. Then head to ledgerwallet.com/start and choose the Nano S.

Follow the instructions on screen and set up your pincode. Then read the recovery words and write them down in the cardboad provided by Ledger. Keep a copy in at least 2 safe different locations. Once you confirm the recovery phrase, you are ready to begin.

Installing the Apps

Download the Ledger Manager as an extension on Chrome.

Once installed, you will see the following screen with your device information, and the applications and firmware available to download.

Upgrade the firmware to the latest version, and install your relevant apps with a single click in the download button.

We will access the Bitcoin Wallet first. Unlock your Ledger Nano S with your personal pincode, navigate to the Bitcoin app and open it. In your machine, open the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin App in Chrome, and you will see your brand new wallet.

Litecoin, Zcash and Bitcoin

Run the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin app, and then choose Zcash or Litecoin in your Ledger, then open the app in it. The Chrome app will load your Zcash or Litecoin Wallet.

You will need to download and install the dedicated application on your PC and click on receive or send to operate your transactions.

Ethereum and Ethereum Classic

The dedicated app looks and works very similar to the other available wallets.

Things to Know

  • If you lose or someone steals your Ledger, your balance can be restored to a new Ledger or to a compatible Wallet.
  • Remember to backup your recovery phrase in a secondary location!

From the Ledger Nano S Knowledgebase:

“ These 24 words are paramount, they are what provides you the ownership of your coins. You must never reveal them, and never loose them.”
