Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel is taking on the giant of social media we know to be Facebook. But let’s Face it, Facebook is to social media, what Google is to the Internet. So how on earth can Snapchat compete with a decade-old app that’s still potent in 2017?

Let’s look at the figures for each app:

  • Facebook has worldwide 1.86 billion monthly active users.
  • Snapchat has worldwide 301 million monthly active users.
  • Facebook is worth $350 billion as of July 2016.
  • Snapchat is worth $25 billion as of their IPO in March 2017.

So, can Snapchat kill Facebook?

Well, based on the figures above, and the fact that Facebook owns both WhatsApp and Instagram, it would be a miracle if Snapchat has any effect on Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has even copied Snapchat’s trademark ‘Stories’ feature, and added them both to Facebook and Instagram, which has damaging consequences for Snapchat’s user base.

In short, Facebook is immortal, and it’s status is unrivalled in the social media world. Snapchat either has to accept the inevitable, or face fighting a losing battle.
