The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) is taking its fight against crime to the metaverse. According to Thursday’s release, the organisation has launched a fully operational metaverse for global law enforcement to experience and “build an effective response” to crimes in the virtual world.

Interpol Launches First Police Metaverse

Interpol said the metaverse is provided through its Secure Cloud. Registered users can interact with other officers through their avatars and tour Interpol’s General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France. The organisation also said members could partake in training courses to improve policing capabilities on the metaverse.

By experiencing the metaverse, law enforcement officers could identify and mitigate risks earlier in the new world.

“For many, the Metaverse seems to herald an abstract future, but the issues it raises are those that have always motivated INTERPOL — supporting our member countries to fight crime and making the world, virtual or not, safer for those who inhabit it,” said Jürgen Stock, the Secretary-General at Interpol.

Interpol fears that the list of potential crimes on the metaverse will likely increase as the technology gains more traction. According to the report, this could present a serious challenge for law enforcement agencies to restrain criminal acts because not all physical crimes count as an offence in the virtual world.

With the inception of the first-ever global police metaverse, Interpol takes a significant step towards experiencing and formulating necessary governance frameworks to curtail possible crimes in the metaverse. “[…] In order for police to understand the Metaverse, we need to experience it,” said Interpol’s Executive Director of Technology and Innovation, Madan Oberoi.

Metaverse on Track for Mass Adoption

Over the past months, metaverse has become a highly-discussed concept, popular not only in the crypto industry but also in business scenes. Several renowned businesses and brands have recently filed for patents to offer products and services relating to cryptocurrency, nonfungible tokens, and the metaverse.

Earlier this month, Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, announced plans to support businesses working on the metaverse, including NFTs and Web3.
