Scammers are going to extraordinary lengths to lure their unsuspecting victims into parting with their hard-earned digital assets. According to FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, scammers in the United Kingdom have been calling people and impersonating FTX staff to defraud them.

Mr Bankman-Fried has therefore cautioned FTX users against responding to such requests through the phone as the crypto exchange would never call anyone directly. He shared the information about scammers impersonating FTX through the tweet below.

46k People Have Lost over $1 Billion in Crypto Scams Since 2021

Scammers have long targeted the crypto community in their schemes to defraud them.

According to a June 2022 US Federal Trade Commission report, more than 46,000 people have lost over $1 billion in crypto to scams since the beginning of 2021. In addition, the average amount lost per individual is estimated to be $2,600. People who have lost funds to crypto scams report that they mostly lost Bitcoin (70%), Tether (10%), and Ether (9%).

2022 Might be a Big Year for Scammers

2021 has so far been the highest grossing year for scammers, earning $680 million from their victims. However, 2022 might be an even bigger year for scammers as they have made $329 million in the first quarter of 2022.
