Constellation was one of the earliest members within the largest mobility consortium in the world, they joined MOBI nearly 2 years ago and have not been sitting still.

MOBI’s mission is to explore Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), promote standards, and accelerate adoption for the benefit of the industry, consumers, and communities.

MOBI was created to help the mobility industry apply secure, peer-to-peer DLT to improving people’s lives by making mobility more efficient and affordable, to reduce congestion and pollution, and to improve safety.

MOBI’s goal is to create interoperability standards for a mobility blockchain and to support the development of an efficient digital, multi-sided mobility marketplace. MOBI seeks to address the needs of the emerging, connected, and on-demand multi-modal transportation ecosystems.

Because most automotive manufacturers agree that a lack of scale and common standards make it harder for the benefits of blockchain to be realized, MOBI was created in 2017. MOBI arose because these automakers saw the need to communicate and set standards so that the PoCs and solutions could be applied at industry-scale.

Only recently the ‘solutions’ page on Constellation’s website got updated and has gotten it’s own ‘Mobility’ sector.

Key findings from the mobility solutions page are:

Why Automotive Data Exchanges Fail in a B2B Environment.

“For a successful DLT based mobility marketplace that enables exchange of data on the various layers from raw data to processed, an appropriate network design with a homogenized data frameworks is foundational. For this reason, Constellation Network is engaged with the MOBI Data Marketplace (CMDM)
working group, currently defining required standards and mechanisms for exchanging mobility data. The goal is to propose a working DLT architecture that enables a prospering data exchange in the mobility sector between stakeholders of both private enterprises and public agencies.”

“A good use case example is if you think about a car accident taking place, say you know there’s a car in front of the car you’re driving and it hits something and it’s bad. This car senses the lidar and the camera data and knows that it’s bad, how does it prioritize that data to ensure that it course corrects correctly?

The car has the lineage for the insurance in a real-time environment and right now since that data is so big it’s it’s really tough to get that validation or the approval that that data can course correct the car. Currently that data has to go through a 4/5G network up to a centralized server and by the time that decision is made you know you’re already part of the accident.

We need to really bring edge computing to fruition and validate that data as quickly as possible and Constellation has been seen as a true leader in that one use-case so while we talk about mobility we really want to think about big data, where we fit in, securing those large datasets around lidar and image data in a very meaningful way. So, we will be releasing some papers that show our methodology of how we do that.”

“If a car wants to hit level 5 autonomy, where it is truly an autonomous vehicle, it will be required to use a standard in which Constellation co-authored. Furthermore, when it comes to lidar and image data we will have the leading solution for vendors to grab a hold of and and deploy within their environment so it’s a long tail play but it really validates where we fit in this market, especially when it comes to mobility.”

Connected Mobility & Data Marketplace

The CMDM working group aims to enable a DLT based data marketplace for stakeholders of the mobility data space, including OEMs, insurance providers, advertisers, and others to effectively gather, record, access and share data with others. The group is working on standards for vehicle, infrastructure and user data and respective interactions exchange. The system will provide a foundation for applications to be built for a multitude of use, including but not limited to V2X data exchange, targeted advertising with car data, sharing/monetizing AV driving data for better driving algorithms through machine learning.

CMDM is chaired by General Motors and Denso, with the support from Accenture, Constellation Labs, Dealer Market Exchange, Ford, IBM, Nucypher, Ocean Protocol, Swedish Blockchain Association.

Diggles: “Our role within the CMDM: finding out what it takes to achieve a succesful data-exchange. That comes down to two major things: security, making sure that data that comes in is not spoofed/corrupted. And the IP, making sure there is provenance and lineage back to the data-creator so that no matter where it is consumed or ingested that the data-creator gets the credit for their data.”

“Honda Motor and General Motors want to develop ways to facilitate the retrieval of information, such as data that is exchanged between power grids and electric vehicles. Down the road, EV owners could earn fees by storing power in car batteries and exchanging it with the grid. This could end up giving EV owners an advantage as their vehicles become revenue streams.”

“(Constellation) has a strong seat at (MOBI’s) table in defining new standards which will ultimately be used to scale autonomous vehicles.” BenJamin Jorgensen commented on May 6th in telegram.

““Blockchain is becoming increasingly important to the future of mobility,” said Berg. “With the ever-important need for more collaboration across the industry, CMDM’s research in areas like data transfer, validation and micropayments will help us create standards and policies promoting safety and security for drivers and connected vehicles. We’re excited to join such a distinguished and innovative group and look forward to seeing where blockchain takes us in the future.” https://medium.com/collabogate-research-group-in-tokyo/mobility-uses-effective-blockchain-automation-df81e25f8d54
