3 Easy Digital Marketing Tips For Small Businesses

Please note this article has been imported from my businesses website and is catered for small businesses in my local area. However the tools and examples mentioned can easily be applied to any small business.

1. Leverage Your Community

Realistically speaking, Wollongong is such a small area and as such it has a strong community where everyone knows everyone, so leverage this to your advantage.

Did you know teens are 70% more likely to be influenced by peers then they are through other marketing forms?

This is where influencer marketing comes in. You should try and find local influencers that relate to the various market segments and have them endorse your products/ services. Your brand will be put in front of a much larger audience at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising tactics.

You could even use this as a double edged sword using the following approach.

2. Promotions

They are nothing new, so why have I included them on the list?

For starters, I see so many small Wollongong businesses executing digital marketing promotions poorly.

The most painful of which is seeing businesses giving away hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in value for promotions that encourage users to like, comment and share.

Once upon a time those may have been a viable option, Facebook’s algorithms now penalize posts that are asking for likes and comments. Plus, that $500 you spent on a Gopro giveaway…that could have been put to much better use i.e. re-marketing campaigns that can yield an 80% increase in click-through rates.

So how can you run effective promotions?

Re-marketing: Let’s quickly explain what re-marketing is for those who don’t know what it is. Have you ever looked something up on the internet and then 2 seconds later seen it on your social media? That is re-marketing.

Whilst you may think it is annoying, or slightly creepy, there is a reason why businesses are doing it more and more.

It gets results.

As stated earlier, when a user is targeted with an ad for a product or service they have previously looked at they are 80% more likely to purchase it. Even if they don’t it puts that brand at the forefront of their awareness set, so when it does come time to purchase your brand is at the top of their mind.

To further increase the likelihood of your target audience purchasing your product you can set-up a re-marketing/prmotional workflow on Facebook or Google Ads

For example:

  • Step 1: Re-marketing campaign triggered once customer views a product on your website i.e. $49.99 personal training session
  • Step 2: Using Facebook Pixel show that same customer a limited time promotion allowing them to get a personal training session for just $39.99
  • Step 3: If they clicked on the last ad and still didn’t convert, re-target them with a another ad saying last chance offer you have x amount of time to book a personal training session for only $29.99.

If you want proof of whether or not re-marketing works or not, look at an airline site.

They actually increase the price with each visit as they know the more times a customer visits the site the more likely they are to purchase. The price increase is a high pressure tactic used on the visitor, as they will start to notice the prices increasing and thus will be tempted to make an emotional purchase decision for fear of pricing going up further.

Influencer collaborations:

Have you heard of HiSmile?

If you haven’t feel free to check the video out below.

They are a teeth whitening company that was launched in 2014 by two young Goldcoast kids with $20 000 of their own money. Since then HiSmile has seen explosive growth, now being worth over $40 million.

Their success comes down to influencer marketing.

When they started they recognised the opportunity that lay within influencer marketing and as a result gave away thousands’s of dollars worth of their product to micro influencers, today, some of the largest celebrities around such as Connor Mcgregor and Kylie Jenner endorse their products.

Why is influencer marketing so successful?

Influencer marketing allows you to put your brand in front of thousands of your relevant target market in a fraction of the time, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional marketing strategies. It has become increasingly important as consumers are being influenced less by traditional marketing efforts and are more likely to purchase a product after a word-of-mouth referral. Millenials are the ones whom are most influenced by their peers, if a product is recommended by a peer they are 70% more likely to purchase it.

That is why your business should combine influencer marketing with promotions that benefit the influencers following to create high purchase intent and increase brand awareness.

Social media content marketing is something that many small businesses struggle with, however it is actually much easier than you may thing, especially because Wollongong is such a photogenic region with the Sea Cliff Bridge, Wollongong Light House, Stanwell Tops, Sublime Point, etc. So there is no excuse not to have amazing content for your digital marketing.

The video below features entrepreneurial genious Kerwin Rae talking to HiSmile’s founders Nik and Alex on their businesses success. It is over an hour long but it is well worth the watch.

3. Content

Here are several tips for producing content:

For time constrained business owners: Hand over social media responsibility to on-shift managers. Make it a part of the managers role to upload one photo each day to your businesses social media pages. You could get creative with it and have a monthly competition among staff members and the person who creates the most creative post gets a little reward.

User generated content: Have your customers do all of the work for you. You can run promotions such as a monthly giveaway to the person who posts the best photo with your business tagged within that month. User generated content also puts your brand in front of a larger audience as your customers are promoting your business to all of their network.

Product launches: If you are launching a new product such as a new clothing line go to any of the land marks I stated earlier and take some shots of people wearing your new collection.

Content ideas: If you are looking for some inspiration on where to shoot go onto Instagram -> Search ‘Wollongong’ in ‘tags’ -> view trending posts. If you are looking for ideas in general search whatever your businesses niche is in ‘tags’ and see what the top performing posts are.

Blogging: This requires a lot more effort then the others, if you want tips on how to incorporate blogs into your business enter your details below to be the first to see our blog on blogging, as well as receive other digital marketing tools and resources to help improve your business.
