Liu Cixin, Author of The Three Body Problem : Blockchain — Migrating From The Real World To The Virtual World

On June 30th, the “AI • Cross-border” sub-meeting at the “World Blockchain Conference • Wuzhen” opened. At the “Sci-Fi World in Blockchain” cross-border roundtable forum, the famous science fiction writer — Liu Cixin, of “The Three Body Problem” talked freely with guests from science fiction and blockchain community.

What is the relationship between blockchain and science fiction? If there is civilization between the stars, how will civilization be established? Is digital currency the best way for human consensus? How to build consensus with AI when awareness is uploaded to the network? From a future perspective, we are all primitive people. What do you want to say when talking about the future?

Liu Cixin: The emergence of blockchain is an important step for the real world to become an virtual world.

From a small perspective, I haven’t seen any blockchain stuff in science fiction, but the blockchain is really sci-fi. From a large perspective, we are now in the age of great migration and are migrating from the real world to the virtual world. This is the most common theme of science fiction.

The blockchain uses numbers to build a solid credit system in the virtual world. In the past, credit systems were mostly established by powerful institutions such as countries. The credit system has not existed before in the virtual world. Now that blockchain technology has emerged, the virtual world has a credit system too, so it can be said that it has taken a giant step forward. Based on this credit system, the virtual world can do a lot of things that the real world can do. For example, the most typical example: you can issue currency yourself. In the past, the currency issued by the real world could only be issued by the state. In that case, it took a big step forward for that the virtual world became a parallel world of the real world.

According to this process, there may be a moment one day, the virtual world will become a reality, and the real world will become a virtual world. At that time, our lives will be completed in a virtual world; and if you stay in the real world for too long, it is irresponsible for life. I don’t think this day will be too far.

Liu Cixin: The real darkness is when humans fall into the comfort zone of technology.

With the development of AI, we often have a sense of crisis: AI will grab our work. It is said that more than 90% of jobs will be unemployed, and futurists are very afraid that there will be “Lourdes Movement” that appeared at the beginning of last century: workers will destroy machines, social chaos will occur, and the unemployed will cause turmoil.

In my opinion, this is not the darkest scene at all. What is really dark is that humanity has fallen into the comfort zone of technology.

The starvation, war, disease, and poverty faced by mankind before were in fact not entirely a challenge. For the human being as a whole, it is likely an incentive mechanism. It stimulates our williness to survive and inspires us to open up new spaces and desire to survive. If we say we don’t need to do anything, and we have a very rich life, it would be very scary for human beings to fall into this pit. It’s a terrible trap. It can even be predicted that this is the greatest threat to humanity. Whether it is individuals or social groups, once they fall into this technology and settle into the nest, it is difficult to climb up.

Liu Cixin: I believe that technology will affect people more and more profoundly. I believe that in the future, when I have the privilege of meeting you, I may not recognize you as human beings. There is no way to tell if you still have life. But I hope that no matter what the future human beings become, or even become a pile of data in the computer’s memory, I hope that you can keep what are called the most important thing to being human. This is my hope for the future, thank you.
