Mayor Bowser Signs Homeless Shelter Replacement Act Finalizing DC General Closure Strategy
On Monday June 13, 2016, Mayor Muriel Bowser took another historic step in closing D.C. General by signing into law the “Homeless Shelter Replacement Act of 2016.” This law will provide an all 8 wards strategy to close D.C. General by 2019 with alternative, safe and dignified places for families to stay while experiencing homelessness.
Next Steps: Mayor Bowser’s Administration alongside the Council will continue to engage the community on the plan at every step of the process. The Department of General Services (DGS) will finalize property deals, hire architects to design facilities for the new sites, submit new Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) applications, procure firms to construct the sites, and manage the construction of each site.
DHS will continue its work to improve homeless services, and will contract for service providers at each of the new Short-term Family Housing sites through a competitive process. To stay up to date with the process, and see a list of locations, please go to: http://mayor.dc.gov/homewarddc/.
