For the first time this season the Dornbirner Eishockey Club had to admit defeat against the EC Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday. The team from the city of Mozart won their home game 4:3 in overtime.

Red Bulls captain Matthias Trattnig scored the game-winning-goal in overtime.

Entertainment for the fans

It only took 34 seconds for Salzburg to get in the lead. First bully, the puck went to John Hughes, who perfectly assisted Zdenek Kutlak (1.). The latter simply had to shove the puck across the line. Although taken by surprise, the early goal did not put the visiting team off their stride. In fact, quite the reverse! Following several encouraging attacks on goal, Marek Zagrapan proved his abilities, ran through on the side and beautifully passed the puck to James Livingston (8.). Red Bull goalie Luka Gracnar was given no chance. During the remaining minutes of the fast-paced first period both goalies showcased their skills, and didn’t allow another goal. The second period remained goal-less. Both goalies were given the opportunity to show off their ability. The teams stroke up a faster pace, and the match got a little rougher, which led to several powerplay opportunities. Playing one man down seemed to be working better for both the Bulls from Salzburg and the Dornbirn Bulldogs, than playing on powerplay. With 15:7 shots on goal the guests were closer to scoring the lead, but the puck did not find its way in the goal.

The Bulldogs battled hard and came back three times during the game.

Red Bulls Trattnig made the difference

Full of vim and vigor both teams returned for the third period, and mounted one attack after the other. Kutlak hammered from the blue line — the puck deflected off Florian Hardy, and Daniel Welser (44.) was there to put it in goal. Less than two minutes after the puck found its way in the Salzburg-goal again. Jamie Arniel (46./sh) turned a nice pass by Martin Grabher Meier to account and scored. The game was 2:2. Within sixty seconds the home team took the lead once more: Layne Viveiros shot from the side, and again it was Welser (47.), who deflected the puck for Salz urg’s third goal. 27 seconds after that Martin Grabher Meier (48.) made for the tie once more. The opponents were on a par, and overtime had to bring the decision. Eventually captain Matthias Trattnig (66.) took care of the 4:3-OT-win for the Bulls from Salzburg.

“We are in the entertainment business and that was really a good game for the fans. I think in the overtime we were the better team today.” — Red Bulls Head Coach Daniel Ratushny.
