Matt Carroll was serving as a US Army intelligence officer in Baghdad when he got his first inkling of the power of information.

Carroll, whose tour of duty in Iraq lasted between 2006 and 2009, recalled that “everything changed” when the military began to figure out how to make sense of the flood of seemingly disparate pieces of information flowing in over the transom each day. “It changed how we carried out counterinsurgency operations,” he said. …

On behalf of the team at Threshold Ventures/DFJ, I am excited to congratulate Harry, Tom, and the team at Periscope Data — who today announced that they are merging with Sisense, a combination that will create the most complete and powerful platform for business intelligence (BI).

We first met Harry and Tom in early 2015, thanks to an introduction from Bubba Murarka. A series of conversations and meetings followed, until later that year when we proudly led Periscope Data’s Series A financing. I joined the board as the first outside director.

Over the last three and a half years, it has been amazing to see the speed and crispness with which the Periscope Data team executed against their vision. The most obviously visible example would be growing its revenues by ~20x — but I think even more impressive was building an incredibly strong culture, one of the strongest I’ve seen as an investor, and one that was consistently called out both internally and externally for its clear values and focus on diversity and inclusion. …

I’m excited to announce that Threshold Ventures led a ~$16.4 million Series B in BentoBox, the leading provider of revenue generating technology to restaurants. At Threshold, we actively look for founders who have unique insights that cause us to re-examine our preconceived notions or prevailing wisdom on sectors. While the restaurant technology space is crowded with point solutions and tools, BentoBox and, in particular, Krystle Mobayeni, the company’s CEO, immediately stood out to us as having a very different approach to this market.

Krystle started her career as a web and product designer and worked with a myriad of small businesses including many restaurants. Through this experience, she realized that restaurants had a common and growing problem. The vast majority of technologies in the restaurant space were disintermediating restaurant owners from their consumers while collecting a “tax” on each transaction. While restaurant owners knew they had to react to changing consumer demands, they didn’t have the tools to do so themselves. …

There are big ideas and then there are BIG ideas. Helix Co-Founders Justin Kao, James Lu, and Scott Burke are hard at work tackling the latter. Their goal: nothing short of empowering every person to improve their life by understanding their DNA.

The field of personal genomics is relatively new and, until recently, the idea didn’t make economic sense. But technological breakthroughs have sharply reduced the cost of sequencing an entire human-sized genome from roughly $100 million to do it the first time, to about $1,000 today. That decrease in cost has opened the way to thinking about how to proactively diagnose and treat patients by analyzing their genes to prevent or control potentially threatening medical conditions. …

With a lot of hard work — and tutoring from her parents — Alice Zhang flowered intellectually, ultimately graduating with honors from Princeton and then enrolling in the MD/PhD program at UCLA’s School of Medicine.

But to the surprise of her peers and professors, Zhang decided to leave the program at UCLA before graduating and decamped in Silicon Valley where she wanted to pursue a very big idea: to find a way to merge machine learning, neuroscience, and experimental biology in the pursuit of speeding up the process of drug discovery for complex diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. …

Jen has been in the talent industry for nearly 15 years with a focus on managing executive searches and counseling founders as they scale their companies. Prior to DFJ, Jen was the head of talent at Comcast Ventures, as well as a partner on the executive talent team at Andreessen Horowitz. Jen spent over four years at Box, one of DFJ’s portfolio companies, where she built the executive search function and ultimately ran recruiting for the company, pre and post IPO. …
