22 Celtic runes

Rune 1 : Fehu ᚠ — (Cattle/Wealth)

1st of Elder Futhark, Fehu symbolises prosperity & material wealth, this can be earned or won. Fehu represents good luck, financial success and abundance in the near future. It can also indicate success in the social sphere.

Each caster chooses whether to read a run in reverse (merkstave) If a rune lands reversed and it resonates with you to read it this way, then its meaning points to a loss of income, personal possessions or even a loss in personal power or confidence.

Rune 2: Uruz ᚢ — (Wild Ox)

Uruz represents the energy of a wild bull. This rune symbolises raw strength, hard work, endurance and perseverance.

This rune also indicates motivation and determination. Uruz reveals there is momentum at play, things are moving at speed.

Uruz reveals that your personal power is increasing and garners a masculine spirit.

Reversed, Uruz may highlight a sudden loss of health and a limit to endurance. There may be blockages which are stopping your progress or your force is being misused to assert unnecessary dominance.

Rune 3: Thurisaz ᚦ — (Giant/Mallet)

Thurisaz represents a giant, or Thor’s hammer. Thurisaz represents power, directed force and powerful energy.

The power thurisaz represents can be used for defence or destruction, in this way thurisaz often indicates nearby danger or conflict. This conflict could be necessary in order to purge frustration or there may be issues which need to be resolved and conflict is unavoidable. Be careful though not to be too forceful in battles, control the power in your words or hands.

If you choose to read the rune in reverse it may indicate defencelessness, even spite and a powerful betrayal.

Rune 4: Ansuz ᚫ — (Message)

Ansuz is a rune of communication. This rune represents the mythical God Odin, Ansuz reveals that you need to listen, there is an insight or divine message arriving.

Ansuz can indicate good advice from a trusted person. Ansuz represents inspiration, wisdom and truth

If read reversed Ansuz may reveal a miscommunication or a hidden deceit, there may be misunderstandings in communication and manipulation at play

Rune 5: Raidho ᚱ — (Journey)

Raidho represents a journey, this rune also speaks of the wheel of life. Raidho indicated travel, which can mean a spiritual journey-internal growth and expansion, or a physical destination such as moving home or going on holiday.

Raidho represents that we are part of a cycle, evolving and also reveals we need to put things into perspective.

Reversed Raidho can reveal injustices, disruption or stagnation, an inability to move forward.

Rune 6 Kenaz ᚲ — (Torch)

Kenaz represents a torch or flame. This rune represents a beacon, lighting the way toward truth. This rune calls on us to find your way guided by your own shining light. This rune can reveal secrets which were previously unknown will come to light.

Kanaz indicates that you are walking the right path toward your calling in life.

Kanaz also represents knowledge and creativity. Your inspirations and life force, vitality. The power of regeneration is represented in this rune too.

Reading this rune in reverse may mean you lack vision or are stuck in rut. Be wary of having false hope, you need to put effort in to achieve. This rune also highlights instability and inconsistency

Rune 7: Gebo ᚷ — (Gift)

Gebo represents gifts. Gebo is a symbol of positivity and reveals that you possess many gifts and are abundant in talent. This rune can also indicate that you will soon be bestowed with many great blessings. Gebo is the rune of balance and generosity. This rune all about positive tidings and good relationships between people. The symbol has no inverted meaning so always indicates these positive attributes.

Rune 8: Wunjo ᚹ — (Joy)

Wunjo resembles a flag and therefore represents lineage & victory. Wunjo announces represents triumph, joy, security and safety. When Wunjo is central in a rune reading it encourages celebration and speaks of a strong sense of belonging. Wunjo also represents prosperity,harmony, and spiritual reward.

Reading Wunjo reversed may indicate loneliness or sorrow, also alienation and grief.

Rune 9. Hagalaz ᚺ — (Hail)

Hagalaz is the rune on hail. Hail tends to strike out of the blue and has a destructive power and can devastate crops. Hagalaz can forewarn sudden, cataclysmic change. Of Hagalaz were a tarot card it would be The Tower card.

Hagalaz reveals that change is coming and cannot be avoided, it is out of our hands. The damage done will depend on our own inner strength, are we capable of weathering the storm ? Storms move in to clear the pathway for new things, in this way Hagalaz shows up to help us grow and learn from past mistakes. Hagalaz has no reverse meaning.

Rune 10. Nauthiz ᚾ — (Needs)

Nauthiz represents personal needs. What are we seeking to feel fulfilled? Life is about balance, all aspects of yourself require space, work, play and rest. Looking within at why we focus out energies on some parts of our lives more than others can aid reflecting on what to work on. You can’t pour form an empty cup so feeling fulfilled is important in order that you can give put more.. This rune may indicate delay In progress or restriction. When Nauthiz shows up we are being guided to practice patience.

When reversed this rune often reveals depression and distress or even poverty. This rune tells us to look within and balance our lives, then progress can take place.
