Five Tips for a Successful Meeting with Your Mentor

Everyone knows that a mentor can do wonders for your startup. In fact, entrepreneurs with a mentor are twice as likely to succeed as those without any guidance. But once you’ve got a great mentor, how do you get the most out of your meetings?

Here are five tips from our experience at DIVVII for ensuring a meaningful connection with your mentor.

1. Send your mentor an agenda before your meeting.

A well thought out agenda allows your mentor to better prepare, and provides structure to the meeting that helps push things along.

2. Come prepared with questions.

Think about what problems you are currently dealing with, and what solutions you have tried already. This gives your mentor better context to offer you advice.

3. Know your mentor’s background.

Take a look at the mentor’s experience and values, and look over their LinkedIn profile and company or personal website (DIVVII provides all this information together in a profile). This way, you can tailor your questions to best take advantage of their experience and expertise.

4. Manage your expectations.

Your mentor might not be able to answer every question you have or provide advice for every situation you’re in. And even with great advice, in the end the key is how you implement it.

5. Have fun!

Try not to be intimidated, and connect with the mentor on a personal level. When you’re both in a good mood, it’s easier to be productive, too.

Keeping these five tips in mind will help you be more engaged with your mentor, and take more away from your meetings.
