I think I agree just about everything Rhett has written. But are we talking about removal or destruction ? I agree the statues should be removed from public places but I do not think they should be destroyed. The ‘erasing history’ debate is not relevant, in my view. The fact that they were created, for whatever reason, is history and should be preserved. These statues should find their way into a Museum where people can learn the true facts as outlined by Rhett. History is littered with people destroying monuments — the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Turks were masters of the art of destroying their own history. Today, The Taliban and ISIS are doing exactly the same. Let us not be like them and destroy things just because we disagreed with what they stood for and because we regard them, with some justification, as evil.
