I agree with Paul C. At this point, the record industry is a penniless, sickly shell of its’ former self, so it makes sense that artists are accessing alternative sources of funding for their music. This is especially true for artists like TLC and De La Soul who reached their peak commercial value decades ago and would thus likely get the short end of the already super short music biz stick. Likewise for up-and-comers like Palmer was when she launched her Kickstarter campaign.
On top of that, the disturbing blood-sucking that goes on between brands and artists has reached a troubling peak of late. This includes corporations like major record labels and the huge conglomerates that own them. I’d personally prefer to never have my art supplied to me by NewsCorp, whenever possible. So that said, whatever provides artists with the ability to usurp that method of funding and distribution is cool in my book.
