I really, truly do hope my asking this isn’t annoying at all, but I was wondering something. I’m creating a fictional world that is based in many ways on our Earth, and I wanted to ask: what would be the best way to go about doing that without being, like, being insensitive, like the games you mentioned are being? I don’t want to just take surface-level aesthetics from real-world cultures and just call it a day, because, like you said, that’s harmful and shallow. Is it possible to have, say, a fictional country that is analogous to a real-world country/region/etc., or have certain aspects of it, without delving into problematic areas? Again, I really hope I’m not being a bother by asking this, and I really want to thank you SO much for writing this article, because it really is brilliant, and got me to thinking about my own fiction.
