Will Amazon’s Fire Phone Blaze the Competition?

Amazon’s first attempt in the smartphone arena

The online retailer Amazon unveiled its first smartphone, dubbed “the Fire Phone”. Amazon’s first attempt in the smartphone arena is certainly nothing to scoff at for competitors. In fact, the Fire Phone may just give Apple and Samsung a run for their money, if all of the rumors and speculations about the retailer’s newest innovations are true.

With the rubberized frame, aluminum buttons, and 4.7-inch gorilla glass display, Amazon’s Fire Phone may just be the most durable smartphone to hit the market. The 2.2GHz quadcore Qualcomm processor blows competitors, like Apple’s iPhone 5s dual core processor, completely out of the water. The phone will also feature 3D graphics powered by a Qualcomm 330 Adreno GPU and 2GB RAM, putting it in the same league as the Samsung Galaxy S5.

What’s in it for me?

Amateur photogs can rejoice! The rear facing, 13-megapixel camera will include an f/2.0 lens and feature optical image stabilization, ensuring that Facebook selfies in the bathroom mirror will be perfect every time. The quick-access side shutter button will enable users to capture photos at a moment’s notice without having to enter the Android UI first. Unlimited cloud storage means plenty of room to save those vacation pics, doge memes and party pictures. Typical of Amazon to offer so much storage. Thanks Amazon!

One area that Amazon’s Fire Phone is slightly lacking is the 720p HD display. Many of the industry’s leading competitors have advanced to 1080p-1440p resolution. This may not be a huge difference for most users, but those that like to watch movies or video clips on their phones may find they have difficulty viewing the screen from certain distances.

The phone weighs in at 5.64oz, which is slightly more than the Galaxy S5. Measuring in at 0.35 inches thick, the Fire Phone will be close to the thickness of an iPhone 4s. Other physical features include injection-molded connectors, stereo speakers, and a set of headphones that are promised to be tangle-less.

Fire phone built-in tools & Android apps

Running on a slightly amped-up version of the Android-based Fire OS 3.5, Amazon’s various services will all be available to run out of the box. Mayday, an app developed specifically for the Fire Phone, will offer instant 24-hour tech support from Amazon and AT&T representatives. Another integrated feature will be Firefly. Firefly will cull information from anything viewed by the end-user and instantly provide them with a means to purchase related products, in the Amazon store, of course. By far, one of the most interesting features will be the “dynamic perspective” feature. Dynamic Perspective will adjust the screen view based on the position of the user’s head, by utilizing the four tiny front-view cameras.

All of these great features make the Fire Phone sound like this will be one of 2014’s hottest new gadgets, but for now we can only speculate. Amazon’s 32GB Fire Phone will be available exclusively through AT&T stores and on Amazon.com for $199 with a 2-year contract. A 64GB version will also be available for an additional $100. Buyers may also choose to purchase the phone directly from Amazon without a service plan for $649 (32GB) or $749(64 GB). An added bonus for non-Prime members, will be one year of Amazon Prime Membership for free which usually cost $99.99. This makes the new Fire Phone an even better deal! It’s due to hit AT&T stores nationwide July 25, 2014.
