By now most folks who subscribe to any legitimate news source has seen this image.
This was the scene this past Friday in Washington DC where a group of kids from Covington Catholic High School who were there for a pro-life rally decided to confront a group of Native Americans who were also at the same location to participate in the Indigenous People’s Day March.
The picture and social media videos show the teenagers mocking Omaha elder Nathan Phillips as he sings and drums.
Congresswoman Deb Haaland, a Native American, tweeted that the students showed “blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance”.
I have to be honest. I cannot completely explain just how much this disgusts me. It disgusts me on many levels, as a Catholic, as a parent of a teen, and as a Martial Artist.
When I saw the picture and the videos which have gone viral on social media, I could not believe what I was seeing. How could a Catholic school allow such behavior? How could the chaperones allow kids in their care to behave like this? What would their parents think when they see this?
Well, as the last few days have rolled by, new video has been released showing a lot more footage of the area and the drama that ensued. The video can be seen HERE
The video shows a small group who are indeed taunting the group of high school kids. However, Mr. Nathan Phillips, the Native American, was not involved in the harassment the kids were subjected to, and they knew it as Mr Phillips and his group were obviously walking through when the confrontation occurred.
Now, you would have thought that the drama would have peaked there, and that if there was any more drama then it would have been generated by social media. Well you would be wrong.
On Sunday, Heavy.com reported that a woman claiming to be the boy’s mother basically blamed the student’s actions, (Who’s name has been revealed to be Nick Sandmann, again, via Heavy.com) was a result of the said altercation between the students and a group of “Black Muslims.” An altercation that happened literally minutes before Mr Phillips and his group arrived on the scene.
Today, Monday, Mr. Sandmann issued a statement which you can read HERE
Funny thing about both statements, neither the author of the email nor Mr. Sandmann is accepting responsibility for Mr. Sandmann’s actions. In fact, Mr. Sandmann is stating that he was attempting to diffuse the situation.
Since the incident, A ‘Support Nicholas Sandmann’ Facebook page was created and has posts by people including David Duke supporting him.
So we have a privileged MAGA hat wearing teenage boy and classmates from a private Catholic school who gets into not one, but two altercations, the first being with “Black Muslims” and the second with an elderly Native American Vietnam Vet, who doesn’t take responsibility for anything, not even for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, who is being supported by the likes of David Duke.
Since the incident, Mr. Sandmann and his family have been under fire from social media. “I have received physical and death threats via social media, as well as hateful insults. One person threatened to harm me at school, and one person claims to live in my neighborhood. My parents are receiving death and professional threats because of the social media mob that has formed over this issue.” (Source)
While I in no way excuse the cowardly and terroristic acts of those on social media, I have no sympathy for Mr Sandmann or his family. Contrition which is a staple of the Catholic Church as well as dilligient, strong yet forgiving parenting which includes having our children stand up and take responsibility for their actions.
Perhaps if Mr Sandmann’s family would have instilled the values which the church teaches he would not have been in this situation.
Perhaps if Covington Catholic High School and it’s chaperones would have instilled the values which the church teaches he would not have been in this situation.
Instead all of these folks decided that they should not only allow but also encourage these teenage kids wearing MAGA hats to attend a political rally (because at the end of the day, that’s all the pro-life and pro-choice rallies are), in a geographic area where bunches of political rallies take place all at the same time, because, what could possibly go wrong??
