At UWUA’s Power for America Conference, DPE Training Provides Fuel for Union Growth

Oct 24, 2017 · 2 min read

DPE headed west last week to join the professionals who help keep our cities running at Utility Workers Union of America’s (UWUA) 2017 Power for America conference in Las Vegas. The Power for America conference brought together over 400 UWUA members for three days of workshops and trainings.

At the conference, DPE President Paul E. Almeida and DPE Legislative and Outreach Director Michael Wasser led a workshop for UWUA leaders and activists on best practices for engaging professionals and growing their unions. Based on DPE’s guides Growing Your Union: Engaging Professionals Through New Hire Orientation and Extend the Invitation: A 10 Step Approach to Internal Organizing, the workshop provided UWUA leaders and activists with practical strategies for introducing new hires to their unions and building bigger, stronger memberships. When done well, new hire orientations increase sign-ups and bolster commitment to the union among new hires. An effective internal organizing campaign can similarly help to build bigger, more powerful unions that can deliver gains for professionals.

DPE staff is available to present the Growing Your Union and Extend the Invitation trainings (or trainings on other DPE organizing resources) to affiliates’ leadership and activists. Please contact DPE Legislative and Outreach Director Michael Wasser to learn more.
