Belgian DPA Issues New Recommendations Document

The Belgian DPA — the Privacy Commission published a recommendation document dealing with the records of processing activities. The document aims to assist controllers and processors to sufficiently install the records of processing activities as required by article 30 of the General Data Protection Regulation. More specifically, the Recommendation addresses questions such as:

• Who is obliged to keep the Records?

• Why do companies have to keep the Records?

• What kind of information do the Records have to contain? and

• How should the Records be drawn up?

• How should the Records be kept up to date and how long should they be kept?

EU and Japan Sign Issue Joint Declaration on Data Protection

At the G7 Ise Shima Summit, the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker issued a joint declaration on the free flow of information and the significance of protecting data between the two regions. EU and Japan both recently underwent significant data protection reforms — the entry into force of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on 24 May 2016 and which will apply from 25 May 2018, and of the Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) on 30 May 2017. Both leaders agreed that these changes offer new opportunities to facilitate data exchanges, including through a simultaneous finding of an adequate level of protection by both sides.

UK ICO Publishes International Strategy

Last week the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published an International Strategy to help combat overseas data protection challenges such as increased globalism, changing technology, GDPR and Brexit. The main goal of the Strategy is to enhance privacy protection for the UK public, no matter where in the world potential threats and risks emanate from. It also commits the ICO to learning about new ideas and developments emerging from other countries.
