Consultant radiologist David Bailey has worked for Hampshire Hospitals since leaving the army 15 years ago, but the pull of the forces proved to be too much and he rejoined as a reservist in 2011.

He has since embarked on two separate five-month deployments to a hospital in Afghanistan, supported by the trust, and he is currently on deployment in Somalia.

David said: “The two roles have helped me develop my skills and advance in both areas. My NHS work has certainly helped me in the army, and my army work has helped me in the NHS.

“There lots of similarities between the two organisations. Both have a sense of family, while teamwork is vital.

“A career in the NHS is really worthwhile. You get a sense of reward and know that you are valued.”
