‘Roswell, New Mexico’ (2019)

Roswell is on the CW network- meaning it is free on the CW app (with commercials) or on Netflix.

What

Roswell is a fun and intriguing sci-fi alien show that is completely apropos for 2019. It follows Liz Ortecho, Biomedical scientist as she returns to her hometown of Roswell where she encounters hot aliens, anti-immigrant bigotry, romance, and some lab work (lol). The show has a delicious sub-plot around the immigrant status of Liz’s dad where we get to have some Real Talk on the status of ‘aliens’ in America (see, it’s a pun).

The intergalactic romances drive the plot, and there are shoutouts to X-files, Buffy and the old Roswell show — showing that though CW has taken a classic and smartened it up, they are aware of their roots. Also, the diner where Liz works makes the most decadent milkshakes. Road trip anyone?

For whom

Until the end, there is very little violence that would make the show inappropriate for pre-teens. There are conversations around race, gender, sexual orientation, aging (and dementia) and social class, making this probably a good fit for 14+. It’s also a great show to watch with teens so that these conversations can be probed further (see what I did there?)

The good

We’ve got Spanish on camera, we’ve got diversity, we have multiple sexual orientations, we’ve got science, and of course, we have aliens. In my opinion, the all-around best series take on the…
