Writing about Society, Politics, Religion and Culture. You know all the thing you’re told not to talk about with your boss.

Or…Why white people need to accept their history of hate.

I recently watched the Netflix limited series “Amend: The Fight For America”. This is a series about the history of the 14th Amendment. Personally, I think this should be required viewing for students all over America. It’s educational, moving, and it illuminates the history of hate and racism in America.

This is something that we as white people in America need to acknowledge. As the racist terrorist attack in Georgia shows, we still have so very far to go. According to Stop AAPI Hate, there have been over 3,795 incidents of hate crimes against Asian American and Pacific Islanders over…

It’s preys on those who can least afford it.

I’m going to tell you a little story. I’m going to be paraphrasing from the same story that was told in the Bible.

One day Christ was visiting the temple, as you do. There he saw all manners of commerce going on, and it angered him, that they would defile his father’s house in such a way. “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” He said to them as he kicked them out of the temple.

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who…

How erotica can help you have a better writing tool box.

Erotica is an often maligned genre that gets a bad rap from just about everyone. However, there are a lot of basic skills that both a beginning writers and experienced ones can learn from writing erotica.

It’s not about the sex. It’s about painting a picture of sex, or better yet. Painting a picture of seductive sex. You can learn how to set a stage, build a scene, and create a story that people will want to read. You learn how to write action and the importance of showing and not telling. Or at least the balance of when to…

The fallacy of the boot strap trope.

Republicans love to say how the working poor should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps to get out of poverty. However, everything there is a program that would help those in poverty do just that. The GOP start the, “where is the money going to come from” argument.

In 2019, the United States spent around 718.69 billion U.S. dollars for military spending. It would only take about 25 billion to solve hunger in America. We are by far the only industrialized western nation on the planet that has anything close to this level of hunger and poverty, even per…

We’ve missed the point of it all.

Oh we do love to have a day where we can celebrate love. Let’s look at the person that this day is named after. Saint Valentine, lived from 226 CE to 269 CE, he was a Catholic priest, possibly a bishop, and was know to have ministered to persecuted Christians. How he died is something of a point of contention with historians but secular and otherwise.

One story has it that he was beaten and beheaded because he defied Claudius the Cruel, Also known as Claudius Gothicus (Claudius II) who had banned all marriages and engagements, because Claudius felt that…

How music influences our culture, society, and politics.

Growing up the protest music of the 1960s and 1970s always enamored me. I always thought it was interesting, and the connection between music and politics has always been a close one.

Music influences culture, there isn’t any denying that. You don’t have to look any further than the protest songs of the 1960s. From Joe McDonald’s Anti-Vietnam song “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag” to Joan Baez, to Richie Havens singing “Freedom”. A song he wrote while on stage at Woodstock because he had run out of other material after having played several encores.

Bands like Rage Against the Machine who are unapologetically…

We need more political diversity.

The American political system in a lot of ways should have more than two parties fighting for influence and power. The GOP and the DNC shouldn’t be the dominant political parties. Our system was designed to be a multi-party system. However, over more than two centuries since the founding of the United States we have evolved into a two-party system. It’s hard for a third-party candidate to break through all the noise of the ruling class.

Just look at the number of third-party candidates running for President and I’ll bet that you haven’t heard of most of them. For the…

Why it’s important for Indie writers to get it right.

In this age of Social Networks and branding it is important for you to get your username right. It is your digital identity, it is your calling card. For me, I use either DShorb or DShorbAuthor for my Social Media stuff. I try to keep it as simple as I can to make it as easy as I can for people to find me.

The majority of Indie authors do not have the budget to pay for ads on Facebook or Twitter so your branding is very important to building and maintaining your readership. Picking the right username is very…

Here’s why we should be listening to him.

I believe that everyone should listen to Christopher Titus. He is has become the Lenny Bruce of our time, and he is the truth teller of our time. He is able to give an honest assessment of our world and do so with humor that lets us know that even though the world is a dumpster fire right now things will be better…maybe.

His outlook on life is one of pragmatic optimism, from growing up in an unstable family environment to relationships that almost left him penniless. He has survived and even thrive through events that would have broken a…

Hey all!

I hope your 2020 is going well so far. I know that the year seems like a bit of a dumpster fire with all that is going on right now. Between the pandemic, protests, and riots it seems this year has been rather eventful to say the least.

This is the new Zen Of Observation newsletter. …
